ChimeraOS hardware requirements and HTPC selection guide
Scope
ChimeraOS targets a console-style experience that boots into Steam Big Picture/Gaming Mode behavior and handles system updates as an appliance. Hardware fit is intentionally narrower than “Linux can boot.”
The current installer requirements call for UEFI, disabled Secure Boot, and a dedicated disk; same-disk dual boot and hybrid graphics are not supported. Confirm the live download page before erasing storage.
Best-fit systems
| Scenario | Fit | Evidence gate | Main blocker |
|---|---|---|---|
AMD living-room PC | Strong candidate | Exact GPU, display, audio, wake | Unsupported display/firmware path |
Listed handheld | Model-specific | Current feature matrix | Required control marked missing |
NVIDIA system | Constrained | Current requirements and driver note | Gamescope/session limitation |
Hybrid-graphics laptop | Not a supported target | Current requirements | Hybrid graphics |
Handheld matrix
ChimeraOS publishes per-feature handheld results instead of a single supported/unsupported badge. Read every required column: controls, suspend, audio, gyro, TDP, brightness, and orientation can differ. A green boot result does not override missing features.
Recommendation
Choose ChimeraOS for a dedicated controller-first AMD HTPC or an exact handheld whose current feature matrix meets every required function. Choose another distribution when same-disk dual boot, hybrid graphics, general desktop use, or an unsupported GPU/session is required.
Blockers
- UEFI or Secure Boot configuration cannot meet current requirements.
- The target disk contains data or another OS without a verified backup and separate-disk plan.
- The exact GPU, handheld model, or required feature is absent or limited.
- Recovery media, wired input, and firmware access have not been tested.
Verification
Record hardware IDs, firmware settings, installer version, target disk identity, GPU path, controller, cold boots, suspend cycles, update result, display/audio modes, and a successful external recovery boot.
Rollback
ChimeraOS is a dedicated-system choice, not an in-place reversible theme. Preserve a full backup and the prior OS installer/recovery image before installation. If acceptance tests fail, restore the prior disk image or reinstall the previous OS from tested external media.
