Install, repair, reset, or roll back SteamOS
Start with the symptom and the least destructive supported action. A recovery desktop is a toolbox, not permission to erase the internal drive.
Valve identifies full install/re-image and erase-user-data paths as destructive. Factory reset also returns the device to a clean state. Back up accessible data and verify the selected internal disk before confirmation.
Scope
This guide covers Valve's current SteamOS installation and recovery choices. Their names and availability can differ by device and image release, so the text displayed by the running recovery environment takes precedence over screenshots in this article.
Data-loss boundary
Rollback preserves the most state. Repair is intended to preserve user content but is not a backup. Factory Reset and Erase User Data intentionally remove user state; Install/Re-image clears local data and installs a fresh system. Stop if the current prompt does not make the target and consequence explicit.
Decision tree
| Situation | First applicable path | Data boundary |
|---|---|---|
A recent update boots badly and rollback is offered | Rollback | Preserves more state, but later updates can reintroduce the cause |
SteamOS system files appear damaged and Repair is offered | Repair | Intended to preserve user content; verify current prompt |
The device boots but should return to a clean software state | Factory Reset | Destructive to user state |
Internal storage was replaced or the installation is unrecoverable | Install/Re-image SteamOS | Clears local data and installs a fresh system |
Files must be copied or partitions inspected first | Recovery tools | Tools themselves are not destructive; chosen commands may be |
Only user data must be erased and that option is offered | Erase User Data | Destructive to user data |
If none of these descriptions match the observed screen, stop and record its exact wording instead of guessing.
Before recovery
- Photograph or record the failure, SteamOS update channel, build, and any error text.
- Disconnect nonessential docks, storage, and accessories.
- Back up accessible files from Desktop Mode or the recovery environment.
- Confirm reliable power and a healthy recovery USB.
- Identify the target device by model and capacity.
- Read the recovery action's current description completely.
For media preparation, use Create and verify SteamOS recovery media.
Enter the recovery environment
Use the boot-manager sequence published for the exact device. On Steam Deck, Valve's recovery page provides the model-appropriate button sequence and describes the recovery desktop. Other Powered by SteamOS devices can use different firmware controls.
Wait for the environment to finish loading. A black display, missing internal disk, or repeated USB read error is a reason to troubleshoot first, not to rerun an erase action.
Repair
Use Repair only when the current recovery environment offers it and its description matches the failure. Valve describes the repair path separately from full installation. Even when intended to preserve content, copy recoverable data first because storage faults, interrupted writes, and version changes can still cause loss.
After Repair, restart without the USB and complete the verification checklist before changing update channels or adding tools.
Rollback
Rollback is appropriate when offered after a recent update regression. Record the version before and after rollback. Do not immediately reinstall the same update; first check current Valve release notes and reproduce the original failure with minimal peripherals.
Rollback is not a backup. Preserve user files independently.
Factory reset and erase user data
These choices intentionally remove state. Use them only when the goal is a clean device or user-data removal, not as a generic fix for a dock, display, network, or controller fault. Sign out where possible, sync saves, preserve non-Steam files, and record encryption or authentication material before proceeding.
Install or re-image SteamOS
Choose the full install/re-image path for a replacement internal drive or when less destructive paths do not apply. Reconfirm the internal target and keep power connected. Do not interrupt the operation because the progress display pauses temporarily.
When the installer reports completion, use its shutdown/restart direction, remove the USB at the documented point, and allow the first boot to finish.
Post-recovery verification
Verify the base system before restoring customizations:
Then check:
- cold boot and restart;
- internal controls, touchscreen, audio, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth;
- charging and battery reporting;
- internal storage capacity and free space;
- Gaming Mode and Desktop Mode;
- one small native game and one previously known-working Proton game;
- suspend/resume and an available stable update.
Rollback plan
Before starting, retain a second copy of important data and a known-good recovery drive. If the recovered system fails verification, stop adding plugins or package changes, preserve logs, and distinguish media, storage, firmware, and hardware faults before repeating installation.
Known issues
- Valve's newer installation page and older recovery page can list different supported hardware; always use the page for the exact product and image date.
- Recovery choices may differ between Steam Deck and other Powered by SteamOS devices.
- A successful reinstall cannot repair failing storage, unstable power, unsupported device firmware, or damaged hardware.
