Mini PC SteamOS and Linux gaming compatibility

Scope

“Mini PC” is a form factor, not a hardware model. This page defines a selection and validation contract for AMD x86-64 living-room systems.

Obtain exact component IDs before purchase or installation. Retail revisions may change Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, storage, audio, or firmware without changing the product name.

Verdict

A modern AMD mini PC can be a strong community-supported HTPC, but Valve currently describes other AMD PCs as limited support. Distribution and component evidence—not the enclosure—determine readiness.

Recommendation

Choose Bazzite-Deck for a compatible controller-first AMD HTPC, ChimeraOS for a narrowly scoped couch appliance that meets its requirements, or Bazzite Desktop when desktop workflows matter. Do not describe stock SteamOS as official mini PC support.

Verification

Save lspci -nn, lsusb, BIOS version/settings, image, kernel, Mesa, display-chain inventory, cold boots, suspend cycles, controller wake, audio modes, HDR/VRR modes, update result, and recovery result.

Known issues

HDMI 2.1 features, HDR, VRR, CEC, receiver audio, Bluetooth wake, and s2idle can fail independently. Passing a game benchmark does not validate an HTPC appliance.
