ROG Ally SteamOS and Linux compatibility

Scope

This page covers the 2023 RC71L family. It deliberately keeps the Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme performance classes separate.

ASUS specifications prove components, not Linux behavior. Preserve a Windows recovery path for BIOS and controller firmware workflows that still depend on vendor tools.

Verdict

SteamOS is installable but not officially Powered by SteamOS on this device. Bazzite-Deck has the clearest maintained integration; ChimeraOS publishes a feature-level test record but lists limitations such as fingerprint, gyro, and its own TDP control.

Selection checklist

  • Confirm Z1 versus Z1 Extreme before comparing benchmarks.
  • Update BIOS/controller firmware through a supported vendor path before migration.
  • Test speakers, headphone jack, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, suspend, gyro, rear buttons, RGB, and fingerprint independently.
  • Treat XG Mobile, USB-C docks, microSD, and external VRR as separate matrices.

Recommendation

Choose Bazzite-Deck for a controller-first session and maintained ROG Ally integration. Choose ChimeraOS only after its current feature matrix matches your required controls. Use stock SteamOS when accepting Valve's limited PC support boundary and a more manual device-integration path.

Verification

Record processor variant, BIOS, controller firmware, distribution image, kernel, Mesa, HHD version, suspend cycles, power limits, display modes, and every attached dock before changing this record.

Known issues

Compatibility changes across BIOS, EC/controller firmware, kernel, Mesa, Gamescope, and HHD releases. A result for Z1 Extreme cannot silently become a Z1 performance result.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Z1 and Z1 Extreme ROG Ally equivalent for Linux gaming?
Are the Z1 and Z1 Extreme ROG Ally equivalent for Linux gaming?
No. They share the chassis and integration surface, but the Z1 has 4 RDNA 3 compute units while Z1 Extreme has 12. Performance guidance must name the processor variant.
Does SteamOS beta compatibility mean full hardware support?
Does SteamOS beta compatibility mean full hardware support?
No. Valve allows installation on additional AMD PCs with limited support. Controls, gyro, fingerprint, RGB, suspend, TDP, docks, and firmware still require device-specific evidence.
