Heroic Games Launcher on SteamOS
Scope
Heroic manages Epic, GOG, and Amazon libraries using its documented backends. On SteamOS, upstream directs users to Desktop Mode and Discover. Store ownership and DRM rules still apply.
Trust boundary
Heroic stores account sessions, downloads executable game content, manages Wine/Proton runners and prefixes, and can add Steam shortcuts. Review Flatpak filesystem permissions before exposing removable media or broad home access.
Supported installation
In Desktop Mode, install com.heroicgameslauncher.hgl from Discover/Flathub. Launch it once, sign in through the expected store flow, select a library folder, and install one small test title before importing a large library.
Verification
Record Heroic version, Flatpak permissions, store, game build, install path, runner, prefix, and umu state. Confirm a clean launch in Desktop Mode before creating a Steam shortcut; then verify controller and exit behavior in Gaming Mode.
Update
Update the Flatpak through Discover or the same Flatpak installation. Keep the prior per-game runner until the updated Heroic/runtime combination passes a clean launch.
Uninstall
Remove Steam shortcuts separately. Uninstalling the application should not be combined with deletion of game libraries, prefixes, cloud/local saves, or store data. Inventory those paths first.
Rollback
Restore the prior runner and launch options, restart Heroic, and test the original prefix. If a shortcut fails but Desktop Mode works, recreate only that shortcut rather than reinstalling the game.
Recommended use
Use Heroic for supported Epic, GOG, or Amazon libraries when a graphical, launcher-managed prefix and umu workflow is preferable to manual Wine configuration.
