CryoUtilities applicability and recovery
Scope
CryoUtilities changes swap, memory, and storage behavior outside Valve defaults. Its repository was reachable but showed limited recent maintenance at this review. This page does not endorse a preset.
Upstream warns that resizing swap while storage fills can contribute to a SteamOS boot loop. Do not run the tool without ample free space, power, backup, and a recovery plan.
Trust boundary
The utility requests elevation and can change swap size, swappiness, memory-management values, storage links, and game-data cleanup. A GUI button does not make these changes low risk.
Supported installation
Use the upstream repository's current desktop installer only after inspecting its source and release state. Do not reuse a copied installer from a video or mirror. Record SteamOS build, free space, and current settings first.
Verification
Create a clean per-game baseline using the handbook benchmark protocol. Change one setting, reboot if the tool requires it, and compare frame time, 1% low, power, temperature, swap use, and free space. A launch success alone is not evidence of improvement.
Update
Use the upstream update shortcut only after reviewing changes. Recheck whether the SteamOS release has absorbed or superseded a tweak; never reapply a remembered preset after an OS update without measuring stock behavior.
Uninstall
Choose Stock in CryoUtilities first. Then use its supported uninstaller and choose to revert settings. Preserve logs and user data; do not combine uninstallation with shader-cache or compatdata deletion.
Rollback
Restore Stock settings, reboot, verify swap/free space, and repeat the original baseline. If the system cannot boot or storage is exhausted, stop and use Valve's recovery workflow rather than stacking shell changes.
Recommended use
Use only for a specific reproducible bottleneck where a named setting produces a repeatable gain larger than test variance and no unacceptable storage, stability, power, or thermal side effect.
